Decreasing depression in cancer patients by 67%, Jimmy Carr motivation & where is JITY going

Hello companion,

Welcome to this week’s JITY newsletter! Discover how our mission supports mental health through exercise, the secret to an astonishing 67% reduction in depression among breast cancer patients, Jimmy Carr’s insights on success, and what’s next for JITY.

The purpose of JITY

At Jity, our mission is to empower individuals to become the best version of themselves through science-backed nutrition and fitness knowledge. We are committed to creating high-quality protein products and sharing valuable insights to support our customers in achieving their health and wellness goals.

When founding JITY, the goal wasn’t to create just another protein powder brand focused on aesthetics like six-pack abs or skinny hips. While those are desirable for some, the true value of exercise and a balanced diet lies in their ability to transform mental health. From personal experience, regular exercise has a profound impact on psychological well-being—something far more meaningful than achieving a dream body.

Be wary of your end goal and what your target is for exercising:

Be mindful of your reasons for exercising and your ultimate goals. Even professional bodybuilders can struggle with body image, feeling they’re never big enough. However, when the goal of exercise is to improve mental health, the results are much more rewarding. A healthier mindset naturally leads to better physical outcomes as a bonus, rather than focusing solely on appearance.

Exercise improved quality of life & decreased depression levels of women who previously received breast cancer treatments.

The method:

In a study carried out in Kocaeli University Medical Faculty Hospital, they looked to determine the effects aerobic and stretching exercises have on quality of life and depression levels in breast cancer patients. The study was conducted with 48 women who were previously diagnosed with breast cancer and completed their treatment with no metastasis. The metrics used to assess the impact on quality of life was the WHOQOL-BREF, EORTC-QLQ-C30 and Beck depression inventory (BDI) *(explained below)*

These 48 women where split into two groups.

The study group:

24 women who were given a 12-week aerobic exercise program at a fitness-club (to be completed 3 days a week) and home-based resistance exercise program (to be completed 2 days a week)

The control group:

24 women who were encouraged to maintain their normal level of physical activity habits throughout the study.

The results:

The average depression levels of the study group decreased by 67%. From 15.5 down to 5.

Before commencing the training 42% of the women had moderate to server levels of depression according to the BDI scale yet after the 12 weeks only 8% had depression levels greater than moderate.

The results also show that the study groups ‘quality of life’ was 2.3 times better than the control group who didn’t exercise.

Explanation of the metrics used:

WHOQOL-BREF: is a questionnaire consisting of 24 items including physical health, psychological, social relationships and environment.

EORTC QLQ-C30: the purpose of this is a questionnaire to measure cancer patients’ physical, psychological and social functions. Questions consist of 5 functioning scales (physical, role, cognitive, emotional and social) 3 symptom scales (fatigue, pain, nausea/vomiting)

Beck depression inventory: the purpose of this inventory is to assess the severity of depression and it consists of 21 items measuring cognitive, emotional, motivational and somatic symptoms of depression.

What you can take from this:

If cancer patients can decrease their depression levels by 67% through exercise you can too. Don’t procrastinate on going to the gym or for a run just GO FOR IT. Over thinking can lead to under achieving so take the first step, be brave and start your journey to a healthier mind and a healthier body.

Something I’ve learned this week:

People see the trophies but not the training ground.
